QuickStart Manual for Discussion Groups

The following is a copy of the QuickStart Manual that is sent to the list owners when they setup their mail-list accounts.

We have used a generic name for the list name in this manual: YourListName

And a generic password: open-sesame

Please refer to your own manual that we had sent to via email, to find out what your actual list name and password is.

Your List Name is <<list_name>>

Your Password is <<moderator_password>>

The password is 3 letters, 2 numbers, 3 letters, so please copy

and paste to avoid typos.

This is the only place where we tell you these key facts, so please

keep them in a safe place :-)

You can operate your mailing list using this Quickstart Manual,

your email reader and your web browser.   Our mailing list system

allows you to accomplish three main tasks:

   1)  Any subscriber can send a message to your list

   2)  You can manage your list of subscribers

   3)  You can manage your list's functionality

In addition, your subscribers can join your list (with your approval),

remove themselves from your list, change their address, switch to the

digest version, and toggle themselves into/out of vacation mode.

Your subscribers will use their email reader (like Microsoft

Outlook) to send a message to your list.

Commands to manage your list may be sent in by you via an email message,

or commands may be selected via our web page.

You will always use your web browser to update your mail-list

account, with data like the Welcome and Goodbye messages, and who

is allowed to control your list.

These lessons all have screen shots showing you how to accomplish

any task in a step by step fashion.

You can search this visual User Guide by using the search

form and button at the top of the page.  Just type in the

keyword(s) you are looking for, and click on the Search button.

You can download any lesson in a PDF format to your computer to

save and print out.  To open and read PDF documents, you will

need Acrobat by Adobe.  This program is free and runs on Windows,

Macintosh and Linux computers.  If you don't already have this

               List Name and Password

Your list name is <<list_name>>.  Our documentation will show the word

"yourlistname" in many places, so please substitute <<list_name>>

when you see "yourlistname".

Only you (and any other list moderators) should know the list password.

               Sending messages to your list

To send messages to everybody on your mailing list, please

follow these steps in our visual User Guide.

               Manage your list of subscribers

First of all, you need to understand some of the differences between

the list owner and subscribers email addresses.  Please see

Start at https://database.mail-list.com, and select the option to Update

Subscribers and Send Reports.  After entering your list name and

password, you will be presented with several options to manage your

subscriber list.

Click on the Expand All tab at the top, to see all the options.

Choose the appropriate option, select the command you want, insert the

subscriber's email address, and choose which list moderator should get

the audit trail report back.  Then click on the Submit button to send

in your command.

The audit trail report will come back to your email inbox in about 10

minutes.

               Update your mail-list account

Use your web browser to make changes to your Welcome message,

Goodbye message, to add or remove moderator email addresses,

change the schedule for automatic reports, etc.

Probably one of the first things you want to update, is the physical

address that prints out at the bottom of each message.  Please see

               Information to pass onto your subscribers

The URL at the bottom of each message will allow your subscribers to

unsubscribe, switch to and from the digest, put themselves on and off

of vacation, and change their address.

Some subscribers might have their email settings so that plain text email

has a very small font.  That is easy to fix.

Another common problem is receiving duplicate emails from the list, and

that too should be easy to troubleshoot and fix.
