Trim original email text when replying.

WHY trim original text?
Sometimes, people reply to a message, type their comments, and leave all the original email as well as replies. This clutters up the email, and probably offends some people on your List.

Wouldn't it be nice to receive just part of the original message with the replying person's comments?

Our system offers the ability to trim the original message in any Reply email. Refer to the instructions below to start using this feature.

Use the Web Interface

Log into your mail-list account at https://database.mail-list.com.

  • Click Customize Your List.
  • Click Mobile First Formatting.

1. Step One:  Turn On Trim Replies

  • Click Trim Replies When People Top Post.
  • Choose Yes.
  • Click Save.
Select the radio button preceding "Yes" and click on "mark field for update" button:

2. Step Two:  Number of Lines

After clicking Save in Step One, you are returned to the previous Menu.

  • Click Number Of Lines To Keep When Trimming Top Posts.
  • Enter a value. (Default value is 20.)
This is the number of lines from the original message that will be displayed in a Reply email.
  • Click Save.
Input a value. The default setting is 20.

Example of the Result

Let's use the example of 20 lines by default.

When someone replies, the email includes their entire message, but the original message is now trimmed to just 20 lines. (The original message is shown with a blue line to the left.)

When somebody replies, all of their message is there, but the original message is now trimmed and limited to only 20 lines. Example:

Notice the last line: "Truncated 1310 characters...."

If a recipient needs to read the whole message again, they can review the original email in their Inbox.

Another option is the Searchable Web Archive, if you are using that feature.
