Plain Text Email: Formatting Problems

If you send paragraphs of text where the only carriage return is at the end of each paragraph, then your Subscriber's email software may decide to format the message differently than how you sent it.

NOTE:  A carriage return is inserted when you hit Enter or Return on your keyboard.

Example - what you send

For example, you send this paragraph with just one carriage return at the end.

For example, you send out this paragraph, with just one carriage return at the end.

It looks fine in your email software.

Example - what the receiver sees

When your Subscriber sees the message, it might look like this

Solution

You want to be sure that each line ends with a carriage return, and the line length is not too long.

Therefore, you want to make sure that each line ends with a carriage return, and that the line length is not too long.

In the above example, the paragraph has a carriage return after approximately 70 characters.  Now, your Subscriber will see the same thing that you see.

We can fix this problem for you!

Log into your mail-list account at https://database.mail-list.com.

  • Click Customize Your List.
  • Click Mobile First Formatting.
  • Click Wrap Long Lines On All Messages
  • Choose Yes.
  • Click Save.
Toggle on the setting, by choosing Yes
